Binh Duong Province, Vietnam
TERRACOTTA
VILLA
The land is located in a quiet residential area in Thu Dau Mot city.
The residential areas here develop along the primary and secondary traffic routes with moderate density. Thereby were formed into clusters of houses with equal volumes and assembled hamlets. The more we move towards the river bank, the less building is found and the greenery area becomes larger.
The main access leading from Nguyen Tri Phuong street is to the west of the site. There is also secondary access in the north of the site. Planning boundaries is 11m and the setback distance is 3m from two approaching road directions. The 6m wide pavement is broad and has lots of shading of perennial trees.
The main concept of design is intertwining. The mixture of the closeness of the space and the modern, simplified architectural treatment. The mixture of the used space inside and landscape outside. The mixture of discreetness when viewing the architectural building from the outside and widely reveal when going inside.
From Nguyen Tri Phuong street, the house is presented by the terracotta wall, as a humble display that is deeply rooted in the context of Binh Duong where pottery was one of the most famous craftings here. The indoor spaces are placed to alternate with buffer spaces creating a continuous connection with the outdoor landscape.
Reflecting the sky, water ponds bring a sense of calmness and relaxation into space. The swimming pool, together with the bar and deck area, is the heart of the courtyard where daily interaction and activities occur.
Bedrooms are on the 2nd floor designed as separated units by gardens in between. Glass-brick louvers connect the interior courtyard with the corridor and bedrooms while still maintaining separation and privacy. The green roof is a microecology system that can retain rainfall and reduces heat gain while the roof openings help promote natural light and ventilation. Glass material of the roof both protects the inside from rain and ensure the open atmosphere of the gardens.
The house is designed according to the Courtyard living motif, suitable for the multi-generational family, suitable for the tropical monsoon climate with large patios downstairs and open corridors on the upper floors. Above all, this starting point creates a familiar atmosphere, close to the Vietnamese lifestyle from the past up to now. That is the premise for bonding a family.
